If you're planning to install a rooftop solar system, here's an important update from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

On 18 July 2026, MNRE extended the ALMM List-II (Solar PV Cells) exemption until 31 December 2026 for eligible Net Metering and Open Access Renewable Energy Projects.

The decision provides greater flexibility for customers while supporting the gradual transition to domestically manufactured solar cells.

    What Has Changed?

Projects commissioned on or before 31 December 2026 under the eligible categories can continue using Non-DCR (imported) solar cells, as per the latest MNRE guidelines.

    Eligible Projects

    • Residential Rooftop Solar (Net Metering)
    • Commercial & Industrial Net Metering Projects
    • Open Access Solar Projects

    Why is this Important?

    The extension offers several benefits:

    • Improved availability of solar modules
    • Lower risk of project delays
    • More flexibility in module selection
    • Faster project execution

This gives homeowners and businesses additional confidence when planning a rooftop solar installation.

    Important Clarification

A common misconception is that Non-DCR solar panels are now permitted for all solar projects. This is not correct.
The latest MNRE notification applies only to eligible Net Metering and Open Access projects. It is not a blanket relaxation, and projects outside these categories must continue to comply with the applicable ALMM and project-specific requirements.

    What Should You Do?

If you're considering rooftop solar, this is a good time to evaluate your options. Installing your system during the current policy period allows you to start saving on electricity bills sooner while taking advantage of the available regulatory flexibility.
